Rainbows & whales in Maui

The mountains and valleys are a beautiful green contrast to the blue ocean. Whales are coming in close to shore and if you snorkel you’ll hear them singing! This is my favorite time of year in Maui. Kite surfing in Maui

Wow, the wind was up today. Not a day for a dress. But it is a wonderful day to be out kite surfing or sailing on the ocean . That’s one of the fun things about Maui, no matter the weather, there is always something fun to do. Just look out and see, should I go driving, diving or sail today? Kihei and Lahaina have the most to offer, depending on your style, we have it. You know, some days I just want a slow time warp where there is hardly any traffic or noise. We have that too! I love going to Jaws! In the winter the waves get to be over 50 feet high and helicopters drop surfers on top of them to ride the waves to the shore line where the cliffs are lined with people like me in awe of the raw power of the ocean and mans drive to conquer it. Scuba dive Maui

Are you interested in Scuba Diving? Maui has some awesome sites to experience even if you’ve never done it before. I for one am a lazy diver. That means boat diving for me. Shore diving is beautiful but on a boat there is someone to help me into the vessel, change my gear for me, help me get into my gear again for the next dive and then they do all the cleaning afterwards! How much better can it get? My experience with many shore dives, is, fight through the surf carrying about 75 lbs of gear, walk though waves, fight to get my fins on, long surface swims, then coming back is the worst! I always seam to get knocked down and pummeled in the sand somewhere along the exit route. Then I have to haul my tired carcass through the surf, drag myself up the shore, then stagger to the shower where I am grateful to be relieved of my 75lb burden. Then comes the break down and cleaning. Ugh! So, if offered a choice it’s a no brainer to me, boat every time! Maui has many to choose from and I have tried most. B&B Scuba is my favorite. The journey starts early and after 2 dives the trip is usually finished by 10am leaving the rest of the day for more fun activities to be enjoyed. Lets get wet! Today I got together with a few friends to cruise around the island of Maui on our motorcycles. We start in Kihei and go to Lahaina or Wailuku, or upcountry if it’s a hot day. The experience is awesome. Even though I do it a lot I never get tired of it. There are so many flowers, trees in bloom, the ocean, the country, towns, that a huge part of the experience is breathing deep and enjoying not only the exquisite views but the smells, the temperature changes on your bare arms and more. If you ride a motorcycle, or even a convertible, you HAVE to breath deep! So many people forget to enjoy life with all their senses. There is so mush more then just site. Sunrise Haleakala Maui

In my years of living on Maui I have come to believe that this Island I call home is alive. It beats to its own drum. You have a choice to dance with the beat or the beat will smash you! This is obvious with the ever changing stores, construction and infrastructure pushing Maui to progress with the times. But Maui has a way of holding on to its roots; the past is very alive. So many places have been lovingly restored and protected by people who saw the future and what would happen if they didn’t take action. I for one, am very grateful to these Kapuna (elders) for their wisdom and concern for the Aina (land). When you come to Maui, take a hike in Iao Valley and feel the awesomeness of this lush valley containing the only fresh water river that Maui has to offer! Every Saturday in Kahului Maui hosts a framer’s Market where we can buy fresh produce grown right here and most is very organic. When you come, plan on coming and feasting on this bounty Maui has to offer, there is so much to learn and taste, for instance, did you know there are different kinds of pineapple? The plant produces fruit once a year for 3 years then dies. First year fruit is what you find in the can. Second is shipped off island for others to enjoy but the very best is the 3rd year, so sweet and juicy! It is so ono (good) that it doesn’t leave the island unless you take it with you! There is also a “red” pineapple. You’ve got to try this one. It doesn’t have the acid that the yellow has so I can eat the entire pineapple myself, so juicy! Yum. Golf Maui Any time

I personally took golf lessons when I lived in Palm Springs. My instructor, who was as kind and professional as he could be, with all the politeness and grace he could muster through his tears of laughter, told me I should never leave the driving range, and even then come late so no one could see how much grass was flying! I took his advice. So resigning myself to the driving range I’ve found it does wonders to work off pinned up aggression!! Know what I mean? Maui has so many courses to choose from that there is almost always going to be a T-time available somewhere. Personally, I like to drive the cart and whack the ball (polo style) but I guess that’s not looked well upon! Opps! Hehehe.

Full Moon Motorcycle ride in Maui

Tuesday was a fabulous full moon. During the day you could see it over Haleakala Mountain! My husband & I along with 6 new friends including a couple visiting Maui from Switzerland, rode our motorcycles from Kihei Maui to Lahaina Maui, leaving at 6:30 pm. After driving straight into a breath taking sunset, we cruised down Front Street in Lahaina just in time to see the green flash. Then on we rumbled to Lulu’s in the Cannery Mall to enjoy a great meal together. We have been hosting this full moon ride for quite awhile now, but never has it been comedy central like this night. Everyone laughed so hard our sides hurt. When the time came that we must part company, we rode back to the South Side of Maui under a very full, bright and close moon, slight cool tropical breeze, light dancing on the flat sea, we rode on through the mountains and back to the sea. Maui County Fair

The county fair is coming up! Sept. 30- Oct 3. Come and see the wonderful hand crafted items made from our local people, fruit so beautiful it should be painted on canvas, and of course the food you can get no other time of the year such as flying saucers! There are rides and fun for the whole family. The hand made quilts are breath stunning with all the love and hours showing in every stitch. The photo contest is amazing holding concepts I wouldn't have thought of before!

Lavender flowers in Maui

Yes, Lavender does grow in other areas, but Maui has an event called Ali’i Kula Lavender’s Fall Harvest Event on Oct. 23 from 9am to 2 pm. There will be activities, games, face painting, cookie decorating, live music, pet costume & pumpkin pie eating contest. Sure to be fun for everyone no matter our age, and this is a great excuse to eat all the pumpkin pie you want! Yum! With our white sand beaches in Kihei, and my favorite, secret beaches, I have no problem finding a place to bring my lawn chair and enjoy a beautiful sunset. This time of year the sun sets behind the island of Lanai so if you want to see the infamous green flash, drive to Lahaina although during winter it’s best in Kihei. There, just before the sun disappears into the water till morning, for just a fraction of a second, there…wait....the flash! Once you see it, you’re hooked!! Or at least I was. It is like it got in my blood and became part of me. I want to see it again and again! Every sunset is different. Some paint the sky with multi colors and hues of blue, with pink streaks darting across to capture unsuspecting clouds and light them up in the most brilliant displays of pinks and oranges. Well, I hope you can come and experience this for yourself. See you in Maui at the “flash”!
